Guide to finding your best friend in the metro

In honor of National Dog Day, we've compiled a list of local shelters where you can meet your best friend! There are hundreds of dogs waiting to find their forever home in Mississippi sitting in shelters across the state. Even if you can't adopt, you can still help out! All of these shelters are always looking for volunteers, fosters, and will have ways you can plug in do your part!

Jackson Friends of the Shelter

Jackson Friends of the Animal Shelter is a non-profit 501(c)(3) all-volunteer animal welfare group that works with the City of Jackson (Mississippi) Animal Shelter to find permanent loving homes for the adoption animals, to enhance the quality of life for the shelter animals and to provide spay/neuter services.

How do I adopt? To view animals up for adoption and apply to adopt one to bring home, CLICK HERE. If you want to volunteer, you can visit the shelter any Saturday from 10:00-12:00 to walk and play with all of the adoptable pups.

Mississippi Animal Rescue League

The Mississippi Animal Rescue League, MARL, is a private 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation in Jackson. It is the largest “open admission” shelter in the state, which means they have to accept every animal that comes in the door. Their goal is to find homes for all animals in their facility. They receive an average of 50-60 animals a day. The shelter was chartered in 1969, they are the largest full service animal welfare organization in Central Mississippi providing care and basic medical services for thousands of homeless and unwanted animals each year.

Rescue Revolution of Mississippi

Rescue Revolution is a 501 (c)3 non profit animal rescue that was founded by a group of ladies in central Mississippi. They get medical treatment for pets they rescue, provide love and care in a safe environment, rehabilitate and socialize them until a forever home can be found.  They need fosters to rescue dogs and are always looking for approved foster homes where a dog can crash as they wait on their forever home. Food and all supplies are provided by the rescue.

Community Animal Rescue and Adoption

CARA is a no-kill shelter in Jackson that is operated by volunteers, volunteer board members, and part time shelter employees. They are supported by private donations from individuals, businesses, and fund raising events. They receive no funds from the city, county, state or federal government.

Animal Rescue Fund of Mississippi

Animal Rescue Fund is a no-kill shelter in Jackson, Mississippi. This shelter is typically home to over 60 cats and 240 dogs at any given time.  The pets they rescue stay as long as they need to in order to find a forever home. The shelter says that during their stay, they look to serving the whole animal with attention to their comprehensive care and medical needs and work with them on building social skills.

Coco's House Senior Sanctuary and Rescue

Coco’s House was founded in 2015 by a husband and wife rescue team. They are a senior dog sanctuary and rescue located in Terry, Mississippi. They rescue, vet, then search for the perfect forever home for the dogs in their care. They also work with fosters if you are interested in giving a pup somewhere to lay it’s head while he waits on his forever home. This rescue specializes in older dogs and dogs with special needs.
