If there’s one exhibit you don’t want to miss at MMA, it’s A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration!

JACKSON, Miss. (MISSISSIPPI WEEKEND) -

The Mississippi Museum of Art partnered with the Baltimore Museum of Art to bring A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration to Jackson!

The exhibit is leaving MMA on September 11th, and starting at BMA on October 30th.

The Great Migration started around 1910, and lasted until 1970.

More than 6 million Black Americans moved from southern states, to northern and midwestern states with hopes to avoid Jim Crowe laws and give their families better opportunities in life.

So MMA and BMA commissioned 12 Black creators to share their family experiences with the great migration through art.

The Artists are Akea Brionne, Mark Bradford,  Zoë Charlton, Larry W. Cook, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates Jr., Allison Janae Hamilton, Leslie Hewitt, Steffani Jemison, Robert Pruitt, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, and Carrie Mae Weems.

They engage all of your senses in their work, using paintings, videos, quilting, music, 3D printing, photography, letters, and even sculptures to tell their stories.

But the most important part of the exhibit is what you take away from it. MMA leaves spaces for you to share your story or experience with the exhibit by writing, or video.
